Restaurants, attractions and more in downtown Chicago!
The Walnut Room, built in 1907, is one of Chicago's coolest landmarks.
Located on the seventh floor of Macy's (formerly Marshall Field's) at 111 N. State Street,
the Walnut Room is a festive restaurant for all ages. The restaurant is open
11 a.m.-4 p.m. seven days a week, with expanded hours around the Christmas holiday.
Other than a long wait (up to two or three hours some days), the Walnut Room
is known for it's grand Christmas Tree display. Traditionally, the Christmas tree
had trains and handcrafted displays surrounding the tall tree. Elegant ornaments and lights
covered the tree, making this perhaps the most well-known Christmas tree outside of New York city
or the White House.
On September 9, 2006, Macy's (which purchased Marshall Field's in 2005) renamed the State Street store.
This past year (2007), Macy's had Martha Stewart design the famous State Street window displays and the
Walnut Room's Christmas tree to disappointing reviews.
